Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards

Project Overview

During January to June of 2013, the work of WEAVINGS leaders, facilitators, and participants will focus on the design of student learning experiences that will be embedded in a professional awareness program for educators who are interested in learning about the Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings and Standards. The work will be coordinated with the ongoing efforts of the SD Dept. of Education Office of Indian Education Oceti Sakowin Project.

The goals of the WEAVINGS work mirror the following goals of the Office of Indian Education:
  • Identify innovative strategies that aim to close the achievement gap between Native and non-Native students;
  • Promote educational models that are culturally relevant;
  • Include cultural background information that is necessary to teaching about the Oceti Sakowin

In addition, WEAVINGS will focus on:
  • Developing strategies that will bring awareness of the Oceti Sakowin Project to South Dakota educators;
  • Developing curriculum that will include examples of how standards from the Common Core and Oceti Sakowin standards can be taught together;
  • Contributing to online accessibility of professional development and curriculum resources.

Those who wish to participate in this program will be invited to complete a graduate course through the University of Sioux Falls. The syllabus provides an outline of the work that will be accomplished.
